Word Soup

This collage comprises elements from several reference books. They belong to a dementia sufferer who will never use them again—pages from a Webster’s dictionary, Seth Parker hymnal, and a philosophy book. The well-used book pages had already separated from their spines and each other. It was heartbreaking to deconstruct them further. However, now her treasured books get new life.

Added to the collage are Bister-dyed rice paper and a Campbell’s Soup label—a nod to Andy Warhol.

The hymnal owner was a gifted pianist and organist. The book belonged to her mother before it was passed on to her as she grew in proficiency as a pianist. Clearly it was well loved; there were handwritten annotations on many of the dog-eared pages.

This is part of a continuing series on cognition and memory loss. Text embedded in the collage represent the fleeting thoughts and anxieties of a troubled mind.

The reference books now carry a new message.
